The Inspiration Home Story
As a single-father and disabled veteran, this homeowner’s need for reliable, adaptable, and secure appliances was critical for everyday tasks. In partnership with the Missouri Propane Education & Research Council (MOPERC) HomePro program, a combination of specially adapted features from Homes for Our Troops and propane appliances are making the American Dream possible for this veteran.
Sgt. Dustin Johns was on his second deployment to Afghanistan when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in the traumatic amputation of both legs and two fingers on his right hand. His injury resulted in retirement from the military and made him eligible for veteran home project in 2016.
Homes For Our Troops is a publicly funded, nonprofit organization that builds and donates specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans, to enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives. Since 2004, HFOT has built over 315 specially adapted homes nationwide, with more than 65 projects currently underway. Dustin’s home is one of five HFOT projects in Missouri.
